Gravetye Manor: 20 Years’ Work round an Old Manor House

Friday 4th October 2024

Discover the spectacular re-release of the famous text by garden writer William Robinson with new colour images and foreword by Head Gardener, Tom Coward, bringing the historic Gravetye estate and garden to new life.

Robinson is widely acknowledged to have been one of the greatest gardeners of all time, known as “the Irishman who taught the British how to garden,” and the pioneer of the naturalistic planting style still emulated today by garden designers including Piet Oudolf and many others.

With mentions of specific plants, cultivars, and planting schemes as well as observations of seasonal changes and moods, home gardeners today will relate to Robinson’s charming and entertaining original text and see their own smaller-scale efforts reflected in his own gardening triumphs, failures, and experiments.

Tom will be launching the book with two exciting talk events this Autumn, one at the V&A in London on Tuesday 22nd October and one at Gravetye Manor on Saturday 16th November. Further details and booking links in our What's On Page

The book is available from many good retailers including @hatchardspiccadilly. It can also be purchased at the hotel in person (Gravetye is unable to offer mail order at this time). Copies purchased at Gravetye are all signed by Tom, making them truly unique. This book is not only a wonderful addition to any library but the perfect gift for garden lovers.
